Egypt – Abel Fattah el-Sisi, made his intentions clear last week when he formally declared his intentions to seek another term in Egypt’s coming presidential elections. The elections are scheduled to take place in March. Abel Fattah el-Sisi’s move surprised some experts and he’s almost guaranteed to make it in elections after his strong grip on power, making it almost impossible for any political opposition.
Sami Anan (69 years), the former head of Egyptian armed forces and a presidential contender was accused of committing violations that warrant official investigation, said the Supreme Committee of Armed Forces. Part of his accusations was that he failed to obtain the army’s approval to run for election, hence he is seeking to divide the forces and Egyptian citizens.
As matters unfold, it is becoming clear that the Abel Fattah el-Sisi government is making it a dangerous move to run for the presidency, and it is discouraging to even entertain the idea. While such moves put to question the credibility of such elections, as reported by Al Jazeera, it appears that the Egyptian has little concern for anyone’s views on the credibility of the elections.
Elections
The presidential election is set for 26 to 28 March 2018. To be an eligible candidate, one must collect 25 000 signatures from constituents across 15 governorates, that is, a minimum of 1000 signatures must be from each area, or must have 20 signatures from members of parliament. These requirements, together with a limited infrastructure for the campaign, further making it almost impossible to oppose the current president. Abel Fattah el-Sisi made it to the presidency in 2014, which he won by 97%. As reported by Al Jazeera, Sisi addressed the Egyptian nation and urged them to vote so they can preserve the ongoing democratic experience.
