India – Plagiarism is still a concern in academic institutions. Anil Joseph Pinto, the registrar of Christ University, said teachers still ask primary school students to reproduce from textbooks, as a result, they struggle when coming to colleges. He spoke at the Academic and Research Integrity Conclave 2018, organized by Turnitin, an Internet-based plagiarism-detection service.

Explaining the root causes for the observed growth of plagiarism, Anil said language is sometimes one of the causes. Referring Indian schools, he said, “There is a large number of Indian students who study in their mother tongue in primary and secondary schools and they come under immense pressure in colleges to write theses in English.”

Echoing on the importance of averting plagiarism, S Sancheti, vice-chancellor, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, blamed institutions for competing on achieving accreditations. He said, “Institutions hide plagiarism or claim to have reduced it in order to save their accreditation. If the administrator is result-oriented, quality will suffer.”
