Zimbabwe – On the 18th of April, Zimbabwe celebrated Independence Day without former president Robert Mugabe as a leader and without his presence on the day. This year’s independence marked Zimbabwe marked 38th Independence Day anniversary.
Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa vowed to hold “credible elections” during his speech on the day. The event was attended by a number of dignitaries, including diplomats and opposition party leaders.
It is, however, reported that Mugabe did not honour but rather rejected an invitation to attend the event as he was officially invited. According to News24 Mugabe denied being invited to the celebration. This is not the first time Mugabe has rejected a celebration as also in February Mugabe did not attend the 94th mini-birthday celebration that was organized for him by Zanu-PF youth league.
