Malawi – In 2014, the second woman in Africa to lead a country and former Malawi President Dr Joyce Banda went on a self-imposed exile after losing the country’s election to her opponent President Peter Mutharika and she has not been back since.
Joyce Banda has, however, came back home and she arrived at Blantyre’s airport alighting from an aeroplane from Johannesburg. Banda left her home country after her self-imposed exile that saw an arrest warrant issued against her for alleged corruption.
Suspicions were that the former president committed offences related to abuse of office and money laundering. This corruption scandal was uncovered in 2013 while Banda was still a president when the senior government officials draw off millions of dollars from state coffers. This scandal resulted in donor countries cutting off aid and hampered development in Malawi.
Since Malawi is to hold its elections in 2019, it is still unclear if she will run for office in the election, but, however, at the moment in preparation for the elections, Banda will be re-establishing her People’s Party (PP).
