A UN special envoy who is trying to break and end a political crisis ahead of a general election in Madagascar is being shunned. Opposition Member of Parliament told protesters in the capital of Antananarivo that the UN should let the Madagascans speak to each other.
Since April 21 hundreds of opposition supporters have occupied the May 13 Square seeking the resignation of President Hery Rajaonarimampianina before general elections in December. The opposition says the electoral laws are loaded in the president’s favor and accuses the government of trying to elbow them out of the racer. But the opposition has decided to continue the protest until the constitutional court decides on the petition seeking the removal of the head of state.
Two people were killed and at least 16 people wounded during the protest in the capital Antananarivo. Abdoulaye Bathily a special advisor of the UN secretary general arrived in Madagascar on Sunday (6 May) to try to renew dialogue between the opposition and the ruling party.
Madagascar is set to hold its elections in late November or December 2018.
