Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa escaped injuries during a blast caused by a hand grenade at a rally in the city of Bulawayo while forty-one people were injured and hospitalized with two reported dead. Among those hurt were two vice-presidents, the Zanu-PF party chairwoman, members of a state TV crew and security personnel.
The blast occurred close to Mr Mnangagwa as he was leaving the stage after the rally on the 23rd of June. Mnangagwa said he suspected the G40 group, which supported Grace Mugabe for the presidency, had carried out the attack. However, he did not accuse Mrs Mugabe for being involved in the attempt on his life.
The duo Vice President Kembo Mohadi and Environment Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, who were injured in the blast, were transferred to a hospital in South Africa and their condition is described as stable. Following the blast, the president is planning to make comprehensive changes in his security team which will include advanced work, protective details, and advanced radio technologies.
Moreover, the presidents will now have more gents by his side. On the brighter side, two suspects have been arrested for the grenade bombing, and the duo is expected to appear before a court for insurgency, banditry and terrorism charges. However, it still remains unclear whether the suspects had any links with the former first lady.
