Zimbabwe has been reported to have applied to rejoin the Commonwealth organization. This follows Zimbabwe’s withdrawal from the Commonwealth in 2003 after its joining in 1980 on its independence day. Zimbabwe was, however, pulled out from the bloc of former British colonies by former President Robert Mugabe after its membership was deferred over the violence that has been happening in the country.

With regard to the request, Zimbabwean President wrote the re-joining request to the Commonwealth on the 15th of May and the letter was received by Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland. Of present, the Commonwealth is mobilizing a team that will observe the upcoming elections due in July or August.
