Thailand has moved to shorten visa-free stays for travellers from more than 90 countries as authorities intensify efforts to curb crimes linked to some foreign nationals abusing the country’s tourism entry system.

Thailand Tightens Visa-Free Entry Amid Rising Foreign Crime Cases

Thailand has announced plans to reduce the number of days foreign tourists can stay in the country without a visa as authorities crack down on criminal activities involving some visitors.

According to Channel News Asia, the Thai Cabinet approved the move on Tuesday, with Tourism Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul confirming that visa-free stays would now be reviewed on a country-by-country basis. Most travellers are expected to receive visa-free entry for up to 30 days, while nationals from some countries could be limited to only 15 days.

Thailand currently allows citizens from more than 90 countries, including the United States and members of Europe’s Schengen zone, to enter the country for up to 60 days without a visa. The policy was introduced in July 2024 to help revive tourism and support the economy after the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Thai authorities say the longer stay period has been exploited by some foreigners involved in illegal activities.

According to Channel News Asia, recent arrests in Thailand have involved foreign nationals linked to drug trafficking, sex trafficking and operating businesses such as hotels and schools without legal permits. Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow reportedly said the new restrictions form part of a broader campaign against transnational crime and are not directed at any specific nationality.

Government spokesperson Rachada Dhanadirek said while tourists continue to contribute significantly to the economy, authorities must prevent abuse of the visa system. Tourism remains one of Thailand’s key economic sectors, contributing more than 10 per cent to the country’s gross domestic product.

Despite efforts to revive the sector, visitor numbers have not yet fully returned to levels recorded before the pandemic. Tourism ministry figures show foreign arrivals declined by 3.4 per cent during the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year. Thailand is projecting about 33.5 million international visitors this year, slightly above the nearly 33 million tourists recorded in 2025.
