At least eight people were killed and 18 others injured in a powerful explosion that struck a mosque in the Syrian city of Homs during Friday prayers, CNN reported citing Syrian state media and officials. Syrian state news agency SANA said preliminary investigations indicated explosive devices had been planted inside the mosque, describing the attack as a deliberate act targeting civilians during worship. Emergency responders and security forces quickly arrived at the scene, which was left in ruins with shattered glass and debris scattered across prayer carpets.

Survivors recounted scenes of chaos and panic following the detonation. One witness described worshippers being thrown to the ground by the force of the blast, with others rushing to help the wounded amid cries for assistance. The moment of explosion, coming as the call to prayer was underway, left many shaken and struggling to comprehend the violence unfolding inside a place of worship.

In an official statement, Syrian Information Minister Hamza al-Mustafa condemned the attack as part of broader efforts by “remnants of the former regime, ISIS militants and collaborators” to sow instability and undermine peace in the country. He reiterated the government’s stance on combating terrorism in all its forms and vowed to bring perpetrators to justice.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa also issued a statement condemning the bombing, offering condolences to the victims’ families and affirming the nation’s resolve to protect places of worship and maintain national security. International condemnation has followed, with calls for accountability and an end to violence.
