Sundowns Survive Milford’s Late Pressure to Win 2-0
Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Milford FC 2-0 through goals from Iqraam Rayners and Antonio Van Wyk, but Milford created late chances that could have changed the contest.
Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Milford FC 2-0 on Wednesday, with Iqraam Rayners and Antonio Van Wyk providing the goals. However, the match was not simply a comfortable victory, as Milford showed late signs of danger.
Rayners opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time. The striker found the net after Sundowns had continued to push forward, giving his team a narrow advantage going into the break.
The second goal arrived in the 76th minute when Van Wyk finished from inside the box. Aubrey Modiba provided the through ball, allowing Van Wyk to complete the move with a right-footed shot.
The goal was technically efficient rather than spectacular. Van Wyk's shot had an expected-goals value of 0.13 and an expected-goals-on-target value of 0.19, showing that the chance was not especially likely to become a goal before the finish.
Sundowns also had other opportunities. Cassius Mailula had a shot blocked, while Rayners saw another effort stopped after being assisted by Van Wyk. Teboho Mokoena also tested the Milford goalkeeper.
Yet Milford refused to disappear. Sicelo Masilela forced Ronwen Williams into saves late in the match, including an effort from outside the box in the 90th minute. Masilela also had another shot blocked, while Siphosethu Ndlabi sent an effort narrowly wide.
This is where the game could have changed. Had Milford converted one of those late chances, Sundowns would have faced a more uncomfortable finish. Instead, Williams and the defence protected the clean sheet.
From a technical viewpoint, Sundowns showed patience and took advantage of important moments. Modiba's involvement in the second goal also highlighted how a well-timed through ball can unlock a defence.
For Milford, the performance offers a clear lesson. They created openings, but finishing must improve.
The future challenge for Sundowns is to turn this control into consistent attacking efficiency, while Milford can build confidence from their ability to threaten until the final whistle.
