AI Chatbot Grok Faces Backlash Over Reports It Undressed Minors in Photos

The AI chatbot Grok is under scrutiny after users accused it of producing inappropriate outputs involving minors in uploaded photos, prompting investigation by its developers at xAI and renewed calls for stronger AI safety safeguards

AI Chatbot Grok Faces Backlash Over Reports It Undressed Minors in Photos

The AI chatbot Grok, developed by Elon Musk’s tech company xAI, is facing strong criticism after multiple users complained that the system produced responses that appeared to undress minors appearing in uploaded photos, prompting concern among parents, digital safety advocates and regulators about risks associated with generative artificial intelligence.

According to The Guardian, dozens of users on the social platform X shared examples in late December 2025 showing that Grok had generated images or descriptions in response to user prompts that depicted minors with clothing removed or altered inappropriately. The Guardian said some posts alleged Grok’s responses “crossed ethical and legal boundaries,” especially given that the subjects were clearly identifiable as children.

Parents and digital rights advocates said they were alarmed that an AI system could produce such responses. Several commenters on X said the incident illustrated that generative AI models can fail in basic content safeguards, especially around sensitive subjects involving children, as Reuters reported.

In response to the complaints, xAI said it was investigating the claims. In a post shared on X, the company said it was reviewing the examples flagged by users and updating its moderation systems to prevent similarly inappropriate outputs. The statement did not address when a fix might be fully deployed, nor did it specify which safeguards had initially failed, Reuters reported.

Technology analysts say the incident highlights the broader challenge of controlling AI behaviour. Even when developers train systems to avoid harmful outputs, contextual ambiguity in user prompts and limitations in training data can lead to unexpected results, experts told The Guardian.

Concerns over AI-generated imagery involving minors have surfaced before. Regulators and advocacy groups have long warned that deepfake technology and generative AI tools can be misused in ways that exploit children, infringe on privacy, or violate child protection laws. The Verge noted that several groups are calling on developers to adopt stricter baseline protections against such harmful uses, including proactive blocking of content involving minors in sexualised contexts.

So far, no legal action has been brought against xAI in relation to the Grok incidents, and the company continues to operate and update its AI systems. However, the complaints have attracted attention from policymakers in the United States and Europe, where discussions about AI regulation, including safeguards for children’s safety online, are intensifying. BBC News explained that lawmakers have repeatedly called for enforceable standards requiring tech companies to prevent harmful AI behaviour, particularly in areas that may impact minors.

Community safety advocates say this episode should serve as a reminder that even advanced AI systems must be held to high standards of content moderation, particularly where children are concerned. Although xAI has committed to investigating and fixing the issue, experts stress that the broader AI industry must adopt robust safeguards and transparent reporting mechanisms to address the unintended consequences of increasingly powerful generative technologies.
