Banyana Banyana beat Morocco 2–0 in a friendly match, and coach Desiree Ellis says the win has lifted the team’s confidence ahead of a tough 2026 season.

Banyana Banyana end 2025 with a big confidence boost

Banyana Banyana finished the year on a high after beating Morocco 2–0 in an international friendly match at the Adrar Stadium in Agadir. The two goals came late in the game, scored by midfielders Nonhlanhla Mthandi and Noxolo Cesane. The victory gave the South African women’s team a positive end to 2025.

Coach Desiree Ellis said the result was a big confidence boost for the team as they now head into the off-season. She was happy with how the players responded and believes the win will help them prepare for the challenges of next year. Ellis explained that they wanted to finish the year on a strong note, especially after qualifying for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Beating the host nation added extra meaning to the result.

The coach also warned that the next competition will not be easy. WAFCON has now been expanded to 16 teams. And it will also act as a World Cup qualifier. According to Ellis, this means Banyana Banyana must improve and be even better than they were against Morocco.

Ellis used the match to give some players a chance to show their skills at international level. Bonolo Mokoma, Jessica Wade, Bongiwe Thusi and Nthabi Majiya all got an opportunity to play. She praised their efforts and said it is important to see what each player can add to the team.

Ellis also highlighted Noxolo Cesane’s goal, saying it showed the importance of taking shots when chances come. Overall, she was pleased with both the attacking and defensive performance of the team.

Banyana Banyana now go into the break with confidence, hope, and clear goals for the new year.
