Bondi Beach Shooting Kills 11 as Australia Treats Attack as Terror Incident

At least 11 people were killed and 29 others wounded after a mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney on Sunday, in one of the deadliest attacks in Australia in recent years.

Police said two officers were among those injured. One suspected gunman was shot dead at the scene, while another alleged attacker was left in critical condition. Authorities described the incident as a terrorist attack and said it appeared to target Sydney’s Jewish community on the first day of Hanukkah.

Security forces sealed off the popular beach area as emergency teams rushed victims to nearby hospitals. Police and bomb squads continued to search the area amid concerns that explosives may have been planted, turning one of Australia’s busiest tourist spots into a near-empty security zone.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as gunfire rang out. Some said they heard dozens of shots and ran for safety, leaving behind personal belongings as crowds scattered. Restaurant workers and beachgoers reported seeing people flee in fear as police moved in.

Investigators confirmed that at least one of the attackers was previously known to police and Australia’s domestic intelligence agency. Multiple national and federal security agencies have now joined the investigation.

World leaders also reacted to the attack. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the shooting, describing it as a horrific act of violence and expressing solidarity with the Jewish community during Hanukkah.

Video footage shared on social media showed a bystander bravely disarming one of the gunmen before the suspect fled and joined another attacker who continued firing.

The Australian government has urged the public to remain calm while the investigation continues, as authorities work to determine the full motive behind the attack and ensure there are no further threats to public safety.
