Destanee Aiava Retirement Shock: Is Tennis Culture Driving Young Stars Away?

Is professional tennis losing another young voice to a culture it refuses to confront?

Australian player Destanee Aiava, just 25 and once ranked as high as 133 in the world, has announced that 2026 will be her final year on tour. But this is not simply a farewell. It is a warning shot.

In a raw social media post, Aiava described tennis as a “toxic boyfriend” and said the sport had left her drained and unhappy. She argued that life should not be lived in misery and that everyone deserves to wake up loving what they do. Instead, she said she felt behind her peers and stuck in constant comparison.

Aiava, who last competed in doubles at the Australian Open in January, has long faced online abuse. In her statement, she pushed back at critics who targeted her body, her career and even sent hate messages and death threats.

She went further, accusing tennis of hiding behind tradition and “class” while fostering a culture she believes is racist, misogynistic, homophobic and hostile to those who do not fit a narrow image. Aiava, who has Samoan heritage, suggested the polished white outfits mask deeper problems.

Should a global sport built on respect allow players to feel this isolated?

Aiava admitted she is scared of what comes next but said fear is better than living a misaligned life. She reflected that tennis gave her travel, friendships and opportunity, yet it also cost her health, family time and self-worth.

Official governing bodies like ITF, WTA, and Tennis Australia have not yet responded.
