Jacob Duffy was the star of the day as New Zealand took control of the first Test against West Indies in Christchurch. The fast bowler took five wickets and helped bowl West Indies out for 167, giving New Zealand a 64-run lead in the first innings.

By the end of day two, New Zealand had increased that lead to 96 runs, after reaching 32 without loss in their second innings. Devon Conway was on 15 and captain Tom Latham was on 14. Both batsmen looked comfortable and patient at the crease.

For Duffy, this was a very special moment. He is playing only his second Test match and admitted there was a time he thought he would never play Test cricket. After the rain break, he produced a brilliant spell, removing the last four West Indies batsmen in just 16 balls while giving away only two runs. He finished with the best figures of his career, 5 for 34.

West Indies did show some fight earlier in their innings. Shai Hope scored 56 and Tagenarine Chanderpaul made 52. They added 90 runs together and tried to steady the team after a poor start. However, the pitch was difficult for batting, with the ball moving around a lot. Chanderpaul said the conditions were very tough and the batsmen had to be very careful.

Hope was also dealing with an eye infection and had to use eye drops during his innings. Despite this, he played well until he edged a short ball from Duffy and was caught out. Chanderpaul was later dismissed as the light faded.

Matt Henry and Zak Foulkes also helped with important wickets as West Indies collapsed towards the end of the innings.

With a strong lead and no wickets lost in their second innings, New Zealand now have a big advantage going into day three. West Indies will need something special to get back into the match.
