England Urged to Rethink Approach as Ashes Slip Away After Tough Start
Former Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson believes England still have a chance to fight back in the Ashes, but only if they quickly change their mindset and tactics after losing the first two Tests.
England have been warned that a major shift in mindset and strategy is needed if they are to avoid another heavy Ashes defeat in Australia. Former Australian fast bowler Mitchell Johnson says the series is not over yet, but England must adapt fast after losing the opening two Tests.
Australia have taken a strong 2–0 lead after convincing eight-wicket wins in Perth and Brisbane. With the third Test set to begin in Adelaide, the pressure is already mounting on England, who have not won an Ashes series in Australia since 2015. Their recent tours have ended in painful losses of 5–0, 4–0 and 4–0.
Johnson believes Adelaide could offer England a better chance to compete. He has pointed out that conditions there are usually different, with less pace and bounce, which may suit England’s style more. Spin bowling is also expected to play a bigger role, giving the visitors another possible advantage.
However, Johnson has also warned that Australia remain in a very strong position. With key players such as Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon returning, he feels the home side still have momentum and confidence on their side. While he doubts the series will end in a 5–0 whitewash, he has admitted that the danger is clearly there if England fail to respond.
Despite the poor results, Johnson feels England can take some positives from the second Test. Joe Root’s unbeaten 138 showed patience and adaptability, while Jofra Archer impressed with a late spell of aggressive fast bowling. Johnson believes those performances showed what England are capable of when they adjust to conditions.
He has stressed that captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum now face a crucial moment. England, he feels, have the skills but must urgently rethink their tactics and mental approach if they are to stay alive in the series.
