Florida governor moves to rename Palm Beach airport after Trump
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed legislation to rename Palm Beach International Airport after President Donald Trump, marking one of the most high-profile efforts yet to attach the president’s name to major public infrastructure.
According to reporting by The Guardian, the airport would be rebranded as “President Donald J. Trump International Airport,” with the change expected to take effect in July pending approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The move is part of a broader trend in which Trump’s name has increasingly been affixed to public institutions and symbolic national assets. In recent months, his name has been linked to projects ranging from a proposed presidential library in Miami to government programmes, currency initiatives and even cultural institutions.
Florida has been central to these efforts. The airport sits near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, and a nearby roadway was recently renamed President Donald J. Trump Boulevard, further cementing his presence in the region.
Supporters of the name change have framed it as a tribute to Trump’s political influence and ties to the state. The Republican Party of Florida described the move as a “landmark tribute,” reflecting what allies see as his continued legacy in American politics.
However, the decision has sparked criticism from opposition figures and some members of the public. Democratic lawmakers have condemned the renaming as politically motivated, arguing it prioritises symbolism over pressing state concerns such as infrastructure and public services.
Critics also question whether naming a major transport hub after a sitting or recently serving president signals genuine respect or reflects partisan loyalty. Some have labelled the move a “political stunt,” warning it could deepen divisions rather than unify the public around shared national symbols.
The renaming still requires federal approval before becoming official, but if enacted, the airport will join a growing list of buildings, roads and institutions bearing Trump’s name, underscoring an ongoing effort to institutionalise his legacy in both Florida and across the United States.
