Gates Foundation launches probe into Epstein ties amid layoffs and internal reckoning
The Gates Foundation has initiated an independent investigation into its past connections with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as scrutiny intensifies over the philanthropic organization’s governance and leadership.
According to reporting by CNN and other outlets, the foundation confirmed that an external review is underway to assess any historical interactions between its staff and Epstein, as well as to evaluate its vetting procedures for partnerships. The inquiry, commissioned earlier this year, is expected to report back to the foundation’s board and leadership in the coming months.
In a statement, the foundation said the review would examine “past engagement with Epstein” and current safeguards, emphasizing the need for transparency and stronger oversight. The organization has previously acknowledged that a limited number of employees had contact with Epstein after he claimed he could help mobilize funding for global health initiatives, though it maintains no formal partnership or financial relationship ever materialised.
The move comes at a turbulent time for the foundation, which is also planning significant workforce reductions. Internal memos indicate that up to 20% of staff, roughly 500 positions, could be cut over the next several years as part of a broader restructuring strategy aimed at controlling costs and streamlining operations.
The controversy has also placed renewed focus on co-founder Bill Gates and his past association with Epstein. Gates has publicly acknowledged that meeting Epstein was a mistake and has sought to distance himself from the disgraced financier. During a staff town hall earlier this year, he apologised to employees, admitting his actions had damaged the foundation’s reputation and conflicted with its values.
“I apologize, for the mistake that I made,” Gates told staff, taking responsibility for his past interactions while insisting they were limited to discussions about philanthropy.
The dual challenges of reputational scrutiny and internal restructuring highlight a pivotal moment for the foundation, one of the world’s largest philanthropic organisations, as it seeks to reinforce accountability while continuing its global health and development work.
