Gaza peace doubts deepen as attention shifts to Iran
Doubts over the durability of peace in Gaza are intensifying nearly six months after a ceasefire came into effect, as international attention shifts toward escalating tensions with Iran. According to reporting by the BBC, the truce, brokered in late 2025, has failed to deliver meaningful progress toward a lasting political settlement, leaving millions of Palestinians in prolonged uncertainty.
While the ceasefire significantly reduced large-scale fighting, it has not translated into stability on the ground. Sporadic violence continues, with Israeli strikes reported in response to alleged violations, underscoring the fragility of the agreement. Humanitarian conditions remain dire, with widespread displacement, limited access to aid, and stalled reconstruction efforts. Analysts note that the absence of a comprehensive political framework has prevented any real headway in resolving the underlying conflict.
Efforts to move toward a longer-term solution have also faltered. Talks surrounding key issues, including governance of Gaza, disarmament of militant groups, and reconstruction funding, have repeatedly stalled. A proposed plan involving the disarmament of Hamas and the deployment of international peacekeepers remains under discussion, but progress has been slow, with major sticking points unresolved.
Compounding these challenges is the growing regional focus on Iran. Since early 2026, escalating military confrontation involving Iran, Israel and the United States has diverted diplomatic energy and resources away from Gaza. Negotiations tied to Gaza’s future have reportedly been paused or delayed, as mediators and global powers prioritise efforts to contain the wider conflict.
The shift in attention has had tangible consequences. Aid flows into Gaza have been disrupted, and border crossings have been intermittently closed, worsening an already critical humanitarian situation. Experts warn that without sustained international engagement, the ceasefire risks collapsing entirely, potentially triggering renewed large-scale violence.
For many in Gaza, the sense of abandonment is growing. Civilians who initially hoped the ceasefire would mark the beginning of recovery now face continued hardship, with little indication of a political breakthrough. As global focus remains fixed on Iran, fears are mounting that Gaza’s fragile peace may be slipping further out of reach.
