Groundhog Day at Loftus: Sundowns surrender twice in Al Hilal thriller
Like the movie Groundhog Day, Mamelodi Sundowns kept reliving mistakes, drew 2-2 with Al Hilal and faced furious fan reaction.
Mamelodi Sundowns left Loftus Versfeld frustrated after twice throwing away the lead against Al Hilal Omdurman in a dramatic Group C clash that ended 2-2.
The hosts started brightly, yet fell behind in the fifteenth minute when Jean Claude Girumugisha crossed from the left, Khuliso Mudau deflected the ball, and Abdelrazig Omer smashed past Ronwen Williams.
Sundowns answered quickly. Nuno Santos spotted Arthur Sales’ run in the twenty-second minute and the Brazilian forward forced the equaliser despite pressure from the keeper and a defender.
After the break, Masandawana pushed again and reclaimed control in the sixty-fourth minute when a short corner allowed Marcelo Allende to tee up Teboho Mokoena, who blasted home.
Six minutes later, the mood shifted. Sundowns failed to clear inside their own area, Adama Coulibaly squared, and Omer struck again to level matters for the visitors.
Al Hilal finished with ten men after Emmanuel Flomo was sent off late for shoving an opponent in the face, but the damage was already done.
The result followed a previous goalless draw with MC Alger, leaving Sundowns with one win and two draws so far. They remain top of the group on five points, level with Al Hilal, while MC Alger and St Eloi Lupopo sit on one each ahead of weekend fixtures.
Some supporters questioned Williams’ reliability, others compared the current team unfavourably to Rhulani Mokwena’s era, and several asked whether the real problem lies in defence or goalkeeping.
Instead of celebrating group control, Sundowns now face growing pressure before their next continental test as momentum slips again at home nights.
