Hungarian election winner Magyar pledges to renew EU relationship

Hungary’s prime minister-elect Péter Magyar has pledged to reset relations with the European Union after a decisive election victory that ended Viktor Orbán’s 16-year rule, marking what he described as a fundamental political turning point.

According to reporting by The Guardian, Magyar said voters had delivered a mandate “not just for a change of government, but a change of the regime,” framing his win as a historic break from the country’s recent political direction.

Magyar has committed to rebuilding Hungary’s standing within the EU, signalling a more cooperative and pro-European approach after years of tension under Orbán. His platform includes restoring the rule of law, strengthening judicial independence, and tackling corruption, key concerns that had led Brussels to freeze billions of euros in EU funds.

Central to his message has been a willingness to seek compromise with European partners. Magyar acknowledged that disagreements remain, particularly on sensitive issues such as migration policy, Hungary’s stance on Ukraine, and broader foreign policy alignment. However, he has vowed to engage constructively rather than obstruct EU decision-making, a shift from Orbán’s frequent use of veto power in the bloc.

Other areas of concern include governance standards and media freedom, both of which had drawn criticism from EU institutions during the previous administration. Magyar has pledged reforms to address these issues, including joining the European Public Prosecutor’s Office and removing political influence from key state institutions.

His landslide victory, securing a parliamentary supermajority, has been widely interpreted as a form of “regime change,” ending what critics described as democratic backsliding under Orbán. The result has been welcomed by European leaders, who see an opportunity for smoother cooperation and renewed unity within the bloc.

Magyar now faces the challenge of translating electoral momentum into tangible reforms while balancing domestic expectations with EU demands. Nonetheless, his commitment to compromise and institutional reform signals a significant recalibration of Hungary’s role in Europe.
