Major flooding hits Central Queensland as Dawson River levels surge

Heavy rainfall has caused major flooding along Callide Creek and the Dawson River in Central Queensland, with authorities warning that river levels could continue rising as floodwaters move downstream.

Major flooding hits Central Queensland as Dawson River levels surge

Major flooding has been recorded along several rivers in Central Queensland after persistent rainfall caused water levels to rise rapidly in parts of the Fitzroy Basin.

The Callide Creek at Jambin is currently experiencing major flooding after the water level reached about 5.45 metres and remained steady. Authorities expect the creek to peak near 5.7 metres later in the evening, posing a threat to nearby low-lying communities. According to Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology, the rising water levels are the result of heavy rainfall across the catchment area, which has led to rapid inflows into creeks and rivers in the region.

Further downstream, major flooding is also affecting areas along the Dawson River, particularly at Baralaba, Karamea and Beckers. Based on readings from nearby gauges, the river level at Baralaba has already exceeded the major flood level of nine metres and is continuing to rise. The Bureau of Meteorology reported that the water level could reach about 13 metres later in the evening if current conditions persist.

Authorities have warned that the flooding situation could worsen in the coming days as additional water from upstream sections of the Dawson River flows into downstream communities. According to emergency updates reported by ABC Emergency, further rises are expected later in the week as runoff from the upper parts of the river system continues moving through the basin.

Residents in affected areas have been urged to remain cautious and avoid floodwaters. The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that floodwaters can move quickly and pose serious risks to both motorists and pedestrians.

Flooding is a recurring challenge in parts of Queensland, especially during periods of intense rainfall. The Dawson River forms part of the larger Fitzroy River system, which is known for experiencing significant flooding when heavy rains fall across the catchment area.

Authorities say monitoring of river levels is ongoing, and emergency services remain on alert as conditions may change rapidly depending on rainfall and upstream water flows.
