Man City goalkeepers unhappy as January window approaches
Manchester City could lose two goalkeepers in January, as James Trafford and Stefan Ortega both consider leaving due to lack of playing time.
Manchester City are facing a possible problem in goal as two of their goalkeepers are thinking about leaving in January. One of them is James Trafford, a £31 million summer signing who came to the club from Burnley and became the most expensive British goalkeeper in history. At first, he was expected to be the number one choice under Pep Guardiola.
Trafford started the new season in goal, ahead of Ederson, but his early performances were poor. A heavy defeat to Tottenham made fans lose confidence in him. Soon after that, City signed Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain. Donnarumma quickly became the first-choice keeper, and Ederson left to join Fenerbahçe.
Since then, Trafford has only played in the Carabao Cup and in a Champions League loss to Bayer Leverkusen. This has left him frustrated, because he was told he would be the main goalkeeper when he joined. Now, he is looking at the January transfer window as a chance to move to another club and get regular game time. Newcastle United could be one possible destination, as they were interested in him before City signed him.
Stefan Ortega is also unhappy. He used to be the backup goalkeeper, but this season he has dropped to third choice. He has not even been named on the bench since the first league match in August. With no chances to play, he is also thinking about leaving the club.
Meanwhile, Donnarumma has his own problem. He has already received four yellow cards in just ten Premier League games. This is unusual for a goalkeeper. Three of the cards were for arguing with referees, and one was for wasting time. If he gets one more before the halfway mark of the season, he will be suspended for one game.
With unhappy goalkeepers and discipline issues, January could be a very important month for Manchester City.
