Manhattan Prosecutor Probes Sexual Assault Allegations against Congressman

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has opened an investigation into sexual assault allegations against U.S. Congressman Eric Swalwell, following claims made by multiple women, according to reports by BBC and other international outlets.

Manhattan Prosecutor Probes Sexual Assault Allegations against Congressman

Prosecutors confirmed that the inquiry is being handled by the office’s Special Victims Division after a former congressional staffer accused the lawmaker of engaging in non-consensual sexual acts. The alleged incidents reportedly took place in both California and New York, including an encounter in 2024 at a Manhattan hotel.

The accuser claims she was too intoxicated to consent during the encounters, alleging that she “woke up” to the congressman engaging in sexual activity without her permission. The same woman also reported a prior incident dating back to 2019 when she was employed in his office.

In total, four women have come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against Swalwell. While one accuser alleges sexual assault, others have described inappropriate behaviour, including unsolicited explicit messages and unwanted physical contact.

Swalwell has categorically denied all allegations, describing them as “absolutely false” and politically motivated. In public statements, he has insisted that the claims are timed to undermine his political ambitions, particularly as he campaigns in a competitive gubernatorial race.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s office issued a statement urging anyone with relevant information to come forward, emphasizing that its prosecutors and investigators are trained to handle such cases in a “trauma-informed, survivor-centred manner.”

The investigation has already triggered political fallout, with several allies distancing themselves from the congressman and calls mounting for him to suspend his campaign. Despite the growing pressure, Swalwell has vowed to continue his bid while contesting the allegations.

The case remains under active investigation, and no criminal charges have been announced at this stage.
