Orlando Pirates have confirmed a deal for Mbekezeli Mbokazi to join MLS club Chicago Fire. The 20-year-old arrived in the United States this week to finalise his move, which is reported to be in the region of R51-million. Mbokazi had been linked with an exit for months, having attracted attention following his breakthrough under former coach Jose Riveiro last season.

The young defender quickly became a first-team regular at Pirates, showcasing his defensive skills and maturity, which caught the eye of clubs abroad. Chicago Fire secured his signature ahead of the January transfer window, winning a race that included several interested parties.

Mbokazi is expected to move to Chicago Fire after the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he is tipped for a Bafana Bafana call-up under coach Hugo Broos. Until then, he will still feature in Pirates’ remaining domestic fixtures, including the Carling Knockout final against Marumo Gallants on 6 December at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

This transfer continues a trend of South African players moving to MLS, following the footsteps of Olwethu Makhanya (Philadelphia Union), Bongokuhle Hlongwane (Minnesota United), and Njabulo Blom (St Louis City). Orlando Pirates have also completed recent departures from their development ranks, including winger Mohau Nkota, who joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in July for around R40-million.

Mbokazi’s move represents another milestone in his career, highlighting the growing global demand for young South African talent and marking a significant step for him both domestically and internat

ionally.
