Mexican Mayor Assassinated During Day of the Dead Festivities in Uruapan
In a haunting twist of fate, the Day of the Dead, a celebration meant to honour those who have passed, became the scene of a brutal killing in Uruapan, Mexico.
In a tragic twist of fate, the Day of the Dead, a celebration meant to honor the dead, became the scene of a brutal assassination. Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodríguez, the independent mayor of Uruapan, was shot seven times in the town’s historic plaza during the annual celebration, which also led to the injury of a city council member and a bodyguard. The Mayor later died in the hospital.
The attack unfolded in front of stunned residents and tourists gathered to light candles, lay marigolds, and celebrate the lives of their ancestors. Authorities say the gunman was killed at the scene, and the weapon used was linked to cartel violence. Michoacán remains one of Mexico’s most dangerous states, plagued by turf wars between criminal groups.
Manzo Rodríguez had gained attention for his outspoken stance against corruption and organized crime. He had publicly appealed to President Claudia Sheinbaum for help and accused the state governor and police of ignoring cartel threats. He’d been under protection since December 2024, with added security in May.
Locals nicknamed him “The Mexican Bukele,” referencing El Salvador’s president, known for his tough anti-crime policies. Manzo won office as an independent, promising to confront violence head-on.
