Norris Under Pressure as Piastri Claims Qatar Sprint Pole
Lando Norris will start only third for the Qatar Grand Prix sprint as his title rival Oscar Piastri took pole. George Russell secured second, while Max Verstappen struggled with car issues and will begin sixth. Norris can seal the title this weekend but must outscore both rivals on Sunday.
Lando Norris faces added pressure in Qatar after qualifying only third for the sprint race on a weekend when he has his first chance to become world champion. His McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, who remains in the title fight, secured pole with a smooth and controlled session in which he topped both flying laps. Piastri later indicated that the day had gone well for him, saying the car felt strong after adjustments made before qualifying.
Norris’ session was far less settled. He damaged his floor after an early off-track moment but still stayed close to Piastri on his first lap in the final session. His last attempt fell apart when he ended up behind Alex Albon’s Williams, losing time before running wide at the last corner. Norris later suggested that the pace had been available, but the errors cost him a front-row start.
George Russell took advantage of Norris’ compromised lap to place his Mercedes in second. Max Verstappen endured a difficult session, complaining of bouncing and unstable balance throughout. He also damaged his floor at Turn Four, leaving him sixth. He admitted the sprint may be more about coping than competing.
Fernando Alonso produced one of the standout performances by placing his Aston Martin fourth.
