Paris Prosecutors Raid X Offices as Cybercrime Probe Widens
French prosecutors’ cybercrime unit has carried out a search of the French offices of Elon Musk’s social media platform X, the BBC reports, escalating a high-profile investigation into the company’s operations.
Authorities said the Paris prosecutor’s cybercrime division was conducting the raid with the assistance of Europol and the French national police’s own cybercrime unit, as part of a probe that was first opened in January 2025.
Officials have not yet disclosed the full extent of evidence sought, but the action reflects mounting legal pressure on the platform over a range of allegations, including concerns about how its systems recommend and manage content. While the initial investigation focused on complaints about the alleged abuse of algorithms and data extraction, prosecutors have been broadening their scrutiny to include the spread of harmful material, according to French authorities.
In an official statement posted on X, the Paris prosecutor’s office said both Elon Musk and former X chief executive officer Linda Yaccarino have been summoned to appear at an “open hearing” scheduled for 20 April in Paris as part of the ongoing investigation.
Yaccarino, who stepped down from her role at X in mid-2025, was described by prosecutors as the platform’s “de jure” manager at the time of the events under examination, while Musk is considered the “de facto” head.
The prosecutor’s statement, shared with BBC News, emphasised that the raids and summonses are part of a broader effort to ensure compliance with French law where the platform operates, rather than to pre-judge guilt. The office also noted it would no longer use X for official communications, directing followers instead to platforms such as LinkedIn and Instagram.
X has not yet issued a public response to the latest actions by French authorities.
