Penny Oleksiak Given Two-Year Ban

Canadian Olympic swimmer Penny Oleksiak has been banned for two years after missing three whereabouts updates used for drug testing. She accepted the punishment and will not compete until July 2027. Oleksiak is Canada’s most decorated female Olympian with seven medals.

Penny Oleksiak Given Two-Year Ban

Canadian swimming star Penny Oleksiak has been banned from competition for two years. Officials said she failed to report her whereabouts three times in one year, which is a violation because athletes must update their location so they can be tested for drugs at any time.

The Aquatics Integrity Unit announced that her suspension will last from 15 July 2025 to 14 July 2027. The International Testing Agency explained that Oleksiak did not fight the punishment. Instead, she accepted the decision, which allowed the case to be closed quickly under “acceptance of consequences.”

Swimming Canada reacted by saying they “respect” the ruling but also shared that they will miss her on the national team. They said they hope she returns to the sport once she is allowed to compete again.

Oleksiak, now 25, is Canada’s most decorated female Olympian. She has won seven Olympic medals. Her biggest moment was at the Rio 2016 Games, where she won gold in the women’s 100m freestyle and added three more medals. She later won another three medals at the Tokyo Olympics, which took place in 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

She did not win a medal at the Paris Olympics last year and has recently been overshadowed by rising Canadian star Summer McIntosh, who won three gold medals and a silver at the 2024 Games.

Oleksiak will now be away from competition for two full years, and swimming fans will have to wait until mid-2027 to see if she returns to the pool.
