Sinners: Takes the Oscar Lead with Unprecedented 16 Nominations
Ryan Cooglers latest film has shattered a major Academy Awards record, securing more nominations than any other movie in Oscar history and setting the stage for a dramatic ceremony on March 15th.
The 98th Academy Awards nominations have crowned a historic frontrunner: "Sinners," directed by Ryan Coogler, has broken the all-time record by receiving 16 Oscar nominations. This achievement surpasses the previous benchmark of 14 nominations held jointly by cinematic titans like "All About Eve," "Titanic," and "La La Land," positioning the Warner Bros. film as the most nominated movie in the award's nearly century-long history.
The announcement, made by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, sets the stage for a highly competitive ceremony to be broadcast on ABC and Hulu on Sunday, March 15, with Conan O'Brien returning as host.
The film's success is a personal triumph for its creative leads. Ryan Coogler earned nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay. His recognition as a Best Director nominee places him among an elite group, as he becomes just the seventh Black filmmaker ever to receive a nomination in that category, joining the ranks of Spike Lee, John Singleton, and Barry Jenkins.
For the film's star, Michael B. Jordan, the nomination marks a significant career milestone, as he secured his first-ever Oscar nod for Best Actor. He faces formidable competition in a category that includes Timothée Chalamet for "Marty Supreme," Leonardo DiCaprio for "One Battle After Another," Ethan Hawke, and Wagner Moura.
"One Battle After Another," a provocative exploration of radical political movements directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, emerged as a strong contender with 13 nominations, making it the second-most nominated film of the year. The ten films vying for Best Picture are a diverse mix, including "Sinners," "One Battle After Another," "Bugonia," "Frankenstein," "Hamnet," "Marty Supreme," "Sentimental Value," "Train Dreams," "F1," and "The Secret Agent."
Beyond the headline categories, "Sinners" demonstrated its technical and artistic mastery, earning nominations across the board including Best Cinematography (Autumn Durald Arkapaw), Best Costume Design (Ruth E. Carter), Best Film Editing, Best Original Score (Ludwig Goransson), Best Production Design, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects. The film's supporting actress, Wunmi Mosaku, also received a nomination, adding to the production's widespread acclaim.
"Sinners" has set a new Academy Awards record with 16 nominations, surpassing “Titanic” and “La La Land” and making it the most-nominated film in Oscar history ahead of the 98th ceremony on March 15.
