Sydney Sweeney’s Daring Hollywood Sign Stunt Draws Ire from Landmark Owners
Actress Sydney Sweeney faces investigation and potential legal action after climbing the Hollywood Sign to hang bras for a lingerie promo, a stunt the site owners say was unauthorized.
Actress Sydney Sweeney is under fire from the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and faces potential legal trouble for a promotional stunt that saw her climb the iconic Hollywood Sign and drape it with bras. Video obtained by TMZ shows the "Christy" star and a production team scaling the sign under cover of darkness to string a clothesline of lingerie, believed to be for the launch of her new line, Syrn.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which owns and licenses the sign, stated unequivocally that the production was "not authorized" and that they had no prior knowledge of it. "There was no permission granted to do this as is required," a Chamber representative told TMZ. While Sweeney's production company, Persuasion Pictures, did obtain a general filming permit from the city's FilmLA office, it did not have permission from the Chamber to touch or climb the sign itself. The Chamber had explicitly warned the company that footage of the sign could not be used without its prior approval.
Media reports suggest Sweeney could be investigated for criminal trespass, as footage appears to show her breaching a wire fence to access the site. The Chamber confirmed it is investigating the incident and has not ruled out filing a police report for trespass or vandalism. Though most of the bras were removed after filming, TMZ reported that four or five were left behind at the site.
This is not the first time Sweeney's marketing has sparked controversy; the famous ‘Good Genes Jeans’ ad campaign was also criticized for its slogans. For now, the actress's daring climb has succeeded in grabbing headlines but may land her in hot water with the law and the guardians of one of Los Angeles's most famous landmarks.
