A 14-year-old girl, Liarna Peters, is recovering in hospital after being attacked by a group of girls at a Kiama beach party, with police investigating the filmed incident as concerns grow over rising youth violence and bullying.

Teen Speaks Out After Violent Attack at Kiama Beach Party

A 14-year-old girl has spoken out from hospital after being violently assaulted by a group of teenagers at a beachside gathering in Kiama, in an incident that was filmed and is now under police investigation.

Liarna Peters was attacked by five girls at a secluded area known as the Boneyard on March 21. According to ABC News, the incident began as a verbal altercation after she arrived at the party with friends, having initially planned to stay for only a short time.

Liarna told ABC News that the confrontation quickly turned physical, with one girl punching her before others joined in. She said she was dragged to the ground and repeatedly kicked and punched, including blows to her head. “They dragged me to the ground, and a bunch of them were jumping on my head,” she said, adding that she later lost consciousness during the attack.

Footage of the incident, which has been viewed by police, shows the teenager lying on the ground while several girls assault her. Despite the presence of around 40 people at the scene, Liarna said no one intervened, something she described as one of the most distressing aspects of the ordeal.

Her mother, Ellyse Peters, had been waiting nearby to collect her daughter when she received a call informing her of the incident. She told ABC News that Liarna was carried to her car by a friend in a critical state. “She was literally thrown over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes,” she said, adding that her daughter appeared disoriented and collapsed when she tried to stand.

Liarna was taken to Sydney Children's Hospital, where she was treated for facial injuries and spinal bruising. She was assessed for possible spinal fractures but was later told her injuries, while serious, were not life-threatening, ABC News noted.

NSW Police confirmed they have launched an investigation after reviewing video evidence of the assault. Authorities are working to identify those involved as concerns grow over a pattern of similar incidents involving teenagers being attacked and filmed.

Detective Superintendent Phil Hallinan said the circulation of violent videos online was deeply troubling, noting that while such footage may not directly cause violence, it contributes to its spread by encouraging sharing.

The incident follows other recent cases, including attacks on young girls in Shellharbour and Sydney that were also recorded and shared on social media, raising broader concerns about youth violence and digital behaviour.

From her hospital bed, Liarna said she chose to speak publicly to raise awareness about bullying and its consequences. She described the experience as something no one should go through and called for greater compassion among young people. “Physically or mentally bullying someone or putting someone else down is horrible,” she said.
