Tottenham Struggles: Why Igor Tudor Says Fitness is Key to Avoiding Relegation
Tottenham interim manager, Igor Tudor, acknowledges his squad’s fitness issues and aims to improve their physical condition to avoid relegation. Tudor believes better fitness is crucial for the team to compete effectively.
Tottenham Hotspur are currently facing a battle to avoid relegation, sitting just four points above the Premier League's relegation zone. The team’s poor form, with only two wins in their last 18 league matches, has left them in a precarious position. Igor Tudor, appointed as interim manager, believes that one of the main reasons for their struggles is their physical fitness.
Tudor, known for his demanding coaching style, has admitted that the team is not in optimal physical shape. The players have had a busy schedule with many games and not enough squad rotation due to injuries, which has led to a drop in their fitness levels. Tudor explained that in order to improve the team’s performance, especially when it comes to pressing and high-intensity play, the players need to be in top physical condition.\
He emphasized the importance of using the current break between matches to “put some petrol in the engine” and boost the team’s stamina and fitness. Tudor mentioned that the team’s fatigue has been evident and that for the pressing game to work, every player needs to be fit. He acknowledged that fitness issues have been present for a while, particularly under former manager Thomas Frank.
To address these concerns, Tudor has made the players do running drills in training, a method that resembles pre-season preparation. While these drills are tough, Tudor defended his approach, stating that running without the ball is a necessary part of building the right habits.
He stressed that it’s not about punishing the players but rather getting them fit to compete in high-pressure matches. Tudor’s focus will be on improving fitness to give Spurs the best chance of survival in the Premier League.
