A major fire at a lithium battery recycling facility in Perth’s south-east sent hazardous smoke into nearby communities, prompting emergency warnings and hospitalising one person.

Toxic Lithium Battery Fire Forces Perth Residents Indoors

Residents in parts of Perth were urged to remain indoors on Sunday after a large fire broke out at a lithium battery recycling plant, releasing toxic smoke into surrounding suburbs.

The blaze erupted at a facility in Maddington around midday, quickly spreading through storage areas and workshops. Emergency services confirmed that large quantities of lithium batteries intensified the fire, making it difficult to contain.

According to 9News, the fire involved nearly 80 tonnes of solid-state batteries, which produced hazardous fumes as they burned. Authorities issued a hazmat warning and advised nearby residents to stay inside and avoid exposure to the smoke.

One of the business owners was taken to the hospital following the incident, while significant damage was reported at the site. Early estimates suggest losses could exceed millions of dollars due to destroyed equipment and stock.

Officials from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA said the fire spread rapidly after igniting materials surrounding the batteries, although the exact cause is still under investigation.

Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control later in the day, but crews remained on site into the evening to monitor hotspots and prevent reignition.

The incident highlights growing concerns over the handling and storage of lithium batteries, which are widely used in electronics and renewable energy systems but can pose serious fire risks if not properly managed.
