U.S. Abortion Clinics Continue Closing Even in Stronghold States

Dozens of abortion clinics across the United States have shuttered since the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 2022 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, which ended the federal constitutional right to abortion and returned regulatory authority to the states. While many closures occurred in states that enacted strict bans, the decline has not been limited to those areas, even in states where abortion remains legal and protected, clinic numbers have dropped.

U.S. Abortion Clinics Continue Closing Even in Stronghold States

According to a new report by the Guttmacher Institute, there were 753 brick-and-mortar abortion clinics nationwide at the end of 2025, down from 765 in 2024 and 807 in 2020, a net loss of 54 clinics since before Dobbs and 12 since March 2024.

“Running a clinic in an environment like we have today is oftentimes not sustainable,” said Brittany Fonteno, president and CEO of the National Abortion Federation. She pointed to financial pressures and dwindling community support as key challenges for providers.

Even in New York, widely regarded as a refuge for abortion access, the number of clinics has fallen. Voters enshrined abortion rights into the state constitution in 2024, but Guttmacher data shows New York lost eight clinics between March 2024 and December 2025, one of the largest declines in the nation.

Among recent closures was the Planned Parenthood facility on Bleecker Street in Manhattan, once the non-profit’s only clinic in that borough. Chelsea Williams-Diggs, executive director of the New York Abortion Access Fund, called the loss “a big blow,” noting it undermines both access and support structures for patients.

The strain on abortion providers has been exacerbated by federal policy shifts. Additional moves by the Trump administration, including a block on Medicaid reimbursements to large abortion providers, have intensified financial challenges, leading to the closure of more than 50 Planned Parenthood health centres last year, according to CNN.

Experts say the closures, even in states with protective laws and rising demand, underscore the fragility of abortion access in the post-Dobbs era.
