An Uber driver is recovering after he was allegedly stabbed and assaulted near his home in Point Cook, in Melbourne’s south-west, late Monday night.
According to 9News, the father of seven had just finished work at about 10pm when two hooded men began chasing him in the suburb. As he attempted to run away, he reportedly tripped and fell, allowing the attackers to catch up with him.
9News reported that the suspects stabbed, kicked and struck the man with a hammer before fleeing the scene in a white sedan driven by a third person.
Despite sustaining multiple injuries, the victim managed to make his way back to his house. His stepson told 9News that he opened the door and found the man bleeding from his face and arm, while seven children under the age of 16 were inside the home at the time of the incident.
According to 9News, the driver had recently relocated from Canada to Melbourne to start a new life with his family and was still familiarising himself with the area. The family said they do not know why he may have been targeted.
Neighbour Franco Vermeulen told 9News that security cameras captured footage of the attack and expressed concern about safety in the area following the incident.
Police have since launched a search for the three suspects and are appealing to the public for information. Authorities have urged anyone with details to contact Crime Stoppers as investigations continue. No arrests had been reported at the time of publication.
